End of KCDC Winter League  2016

The last stones of the league have been played with A v B and C v D on neighbouring sheets. Team A's skip was unable to play having been held up at work overseas but the winning form was maintained. The 1st end of 5 stones, however, was really the only difference between the two teams. The final score was 9 - 5 to A but Gill R, Arthur, Nigel and Gill G played some good ends making it a tight game. Team C were on fine form with Anne as lead setting up their ends backed up by Jane, Graeme and Rupert. They had a decisive win over team D who were sadly depleted in number. The increased sweeping and delivery helped Robert build his appetite for steak pie at The Muirs afterwards but he, Pauline and Gill 'N' could not match the formidable form of their opposition.

Thanks to all those who have been full-time or substitute skips of this league as well as all those who have stepped in to sub at various times. There has been a reasonable amount of sub-ing; I suspect some people may have managed a game for each team but there has been no evidence of sabotage in any game ~ quite the opposite at times!

All that remains before 2017 arrives is participation in the KCT Christmas Potty on 27th Dec with rinks at 6pm and 8pm. Those playing are listed on the 'Upcoming Events' page.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Further curling opportunities have been grasped:
The friendly v Borland was a quietly competitve game. Despite losing the first end with 4 stones the damage was reduced with a successful 2nd end gaining 3 stones. Lots of well placed stones by both teams kept the game changing direction. Iain, our skip played some magnificent last stones non finer than in the last end where he drew right onto the button to gain a 2 and draw the match. Whilst this game was unfolding 3 further players had taken up the invitation to play in the LCCC Bonspiel and had an enjoyable evening dressed in Christmas sweaters, angle like halos, tinsel, etc. All great ice time for helping build confidence and hone skills further.

Our Winter League is almost over ~ just 2 more games to be played before the trophy will be decided. Following the games on the evening of 21st December we will finish with a meal out at The Muirs.

Points, 4th December

What a good turnout for the first Points of the season! Nine eager but slightly apprehensive members were in attendance. All thoughts could focus on the stones as Colin Bruce, our ex-chairman, came along with an ex-KCDC member in the form of Brian Johnson to help set up the stones and record the scores. Without their help it would have been a lot harder to focus on the challenges with the stones. With the odd hint and much encouragement from Colin and Brian the points started rolling in, well for some anyway. We worked our way through all ten disciplines of striking, inwicking, drawing, guarding, chap & lie, wick in, raising, chip the winner, drawing through a port, out-wicking…….what a lot of baffling terms and descriptions. Some players found it easier to read the swing of the ice, gauge the direction and weight of delivery than others. Some challenges seemed harder than others until reflecting on individual scores it all seemed hard! When trying to hit or touch stationary targets we would miss by the narrowest of margins but when trying to get through a port we would hit a stone. It was all a great fun. Delivering 40 stones in two hours as opposed to the normal 16 was amazingly tiring though we did no sweeping. Graeme and Iain were victorious in their totals of 27 and 26 respectively, with Gill N not far behind on 21 …………. there were great scores for our newest players with everyone gaining 10 or more. It was great success all round with the bar being set for individual targets in the next pairs later in the season.
